Water Audit - Industry, Buildings, Irrigation

What gets measured gets managed

The world is facing chronic water risks with the demand-supply gap increasing at an alarming pace. The industry is an important stakeholder in water resource management and as a responsible member of the community, needs to be proactive in combating water risks.

Our objective, at Peoples WASH Solution LLP( PWS)  , is to facilitate the industry owners/ buildings owners and farmers  in their endeavor to achieve water efficiency through comprehensive water audits across different sectors. Water audits act as an instrument to identify areas of higher specific water use, assess wastewater pollutant load and determine techniques for mitigation through the application of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) principle. Through our water audit services, we have guided the industry in deciding feasible options on reducing water usage, minimizing wastewater generation, and maximizing recovery. PWS’s water audit provide greater water efficiency solutions and cost savings for meeting internal policies, complying with legal obligations or demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

The water audits follow a multi-staged approach in order to provide both short-term and long-term sustainable water management solutions. The Institute’s experienced teams include analytical, design and engineering experts to work through the audit process and examine solutions for better water management.

Major benefits of water audits across the industrial/ building and irrigation  sectors:

  • 15%-20% water savings
    possible through low-cost
strategies with payback of 4 – 5 months
  • 30%-40% cost savings possible
    through low-medium cost strategies,
    with payback 12 – 18 months
  • 40%-50% cost saving possible
    through Wastewater recycling

Water Positive Certification - Consulting, Audit and Certification Services

Overutilization of water resources and contamination of river systems along with lack of water treatment facilities has aggravated the already existing water crisis in India. The future of India consists of rapid urbanization and an increasing population which will excessively multiply the water demand across sectors energy, industry, domestic, irrigation etc. In the context of extreme neglect, throughout the world, this ‘ubiquitous resource’ today has become a ‘precious’ one, as water is a unique resource without any substitutes or alternatives. This coupled with climate change is going to make the water stress more severe in coming years. The future estimates also show an alarming increase with total water demand in various sectors (energy, industry, drinking water, irrigation etc.) across India growing on account of rapid economic and demographic change specially in the urban centers.

As population continues to boom along with rapid urbanization and concentrate in the metropolitan cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Noida, Pune etc., this has led to an accelerated economic growth with a number of residential units, manufacturing industries, business parks and office spaces thronging up in and around the cities. Global change impact on the use of water resources is the reality and recognizing that urbanization such as expansion of built infrastructure will exert a greater impact on human activity compared to climate change, at least up until 2050, requires urgent action. Therefore, it has become important to use and manage water sustainably. The emerging Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) mandate in corporate governance in India has made many large corporates/industries to embark on the road to sustainability. Companies are gradually incorporating SDGs into their responsible business actions such as achieving water self-sufficiency being one of the key action themes.

With above background,Peoples WASH Solution LLP ( PWS)  is provides technical assistance to help projects enhance their water efficiencies in order to achieve the ‘ Water Positive Certification’. The analysis helps in suggesting recommendations for the design and development of sustainable and water efficient measures for the site to target and achieve overall self-sufficiency and water positivity.

Benefits

In order to understand how much water positive a site is, the impact of water efficient solutions adopted and implemented by the project to reduce their water footprint are analyzed.

The benefits include compliance check with national and municipal regulations. The focus is to:

  • Optimize water consumption to reduce water usage
  • Harness alternative sources of water to reduce dependency on fresh water supply
  • Introduce rainwater harvesting techniques

The analysis is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6: ‘sustainable water management’ adopted by the United Nations. It also aligns with various goals identified under the National Water Mission such as ‘increasing water use efficiency by 20%’.

Calculating Water Positive Index

When a project is net water positive, it is where they are creating/returning more water than they are actually using.

Scope

The Water Positive Study is applicable for both new and existing building/sites. The building typologies include (but are not limited to) banks, hotels, offices, convention centers, educational institutions, business parks, shopping malls, hospitals, airports, metro and railway stations, and industrial buildings.

Zero Liquid Discharge studies and Certifications

Zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) is a water treatment process in which all wastewater is purified and recycled; therefore, leaving zero discharge at the end of the treatment cycle. Zero liquid discharge is an advanced wastewater treatment method that includes ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, evaporation/crystallization, and fractional electrodeionization. PWS helps industries in studies related to ZLD and helps them obtain ZLD certifications.

AWS ( Allinace for Water Stewardship) Standards Assessment and certification

Water Stewardship is defined as the use of water that is socially and culturally equitable, environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial, achieved through a stakeholder-inclusive process that includes both site- and catchment-based actions.

The AWS Standard offers a credible, globally-applicable framework for major water users to understand their own water use and impacts, and to work collaboratively and transparently with others for sustainable water management within the wider water catchment context. Implementers follow the steps and guidance in the AWS Standard to achieve good water stewardship practices that improve site water performance and contribute to wider sustainability goals.

The AWS Standard is built around five steps. Site owners implementing the Standard:

  1. Gather and understand water-related data
  2. Commit to water stewardship and create a water stewardship plan
  3. Implement their plan
  4. Evaluate their performance
  5. Communicate and disclose progress with stakeholders

Each step has a series of criteria and indicators. Following the steps and criteria will lead to improved performance in five areas:

  1. Improved water governance
  2. Sustainable water balance
  3. Good water quality
  4. Healthy status of important water-related areas
  5. Access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for all

Fulfilment of each criteria is evidenced by the related indicators. Sites making claims to good water stewardship are audited and certified as meeting the indicators by credible, third party assessors independent of AWS or the site owners.

PWS helps industry members in going through the process of AWS standards and certifications .
